A Plea for Your Help from the WW2020 Water Working Group

On May 23, 2018 at 7:00 P.M. the Walla Walla City Council will hold the Public Hearing at the City Hall in the Council Chambers; 15 N. 3rd Avenue, Walla Walla, WA (N. 3rd Avenue and Rose Street). Read more…

As you may know, the final opportunity to comment on the City’s Draft Comprehensive Plan Update will be on May 23, 2018.  Our group is very concerned about the language of the Plan, particularly as it applies to the Mill Creek Corridor development.

Many of you attended the visioning workshops put on by Judith Johnson and Kooskooskie Commons, showcasing the WSU Architecture students designs.  You shared the excitement for the potential recreational, riparian habitat, public access, and visual appeal improvements that have been suggested, as well as improved flood control capability.  Other communities have done this; we can, too!

While these points are discussed in the Draft Comprehensive Plan, as they were in the 2008 version, the timeline language is basically “ten + years.”

We strongly believe that the corridor development plan needs to happen right away, as opportunities for small creekside parks along the corridor and the preservation of riparian habitat, for instance, will disappear as the lands bordering Mill Creek become more developed in the coming years.

Please consider taking a moment to send an email to your City Council members, urging them to insist the draft be amended to make the channel restoration a high priority, and to include an urgent timeline for development of the Mill Creek Corridor Development Plan. Let’s not let vague verbiage, such as in the 2008 document, preclude real action from taking place.

Thanks,
Walla Walla 2020 Water Working Group
