Washington State Penitentiary Prison Cemetery History Website
The Washington Territorial Prison was established here in 1886. The first 93 prisoners arrived in 1887 from the Seatco Dungeon, which was also the year the first burials were made in this cemetery. When Washington became a state in 1889, the institution was renamed the Washington State Penitentiary. The total number of burials here over the years appear to have been approximately 348, the last of which was in 1950. Since then, burials are no longer made on the penitentiary grounds. It has been said that “the men in this graveyard were both religious or spiritual, while others were atheist. They died of old age and from violence, from disease and by suicide. They were poets and jokers, good men and bad men, gentlemen and mad men.” Most of what we know of them is simply their crimes.
When new construction took place raising the level of the adjoining ground, in 2009-2010 a cemetery restoration project was undertaken to remove grave markers, place additional soil over the graves, and to restore the markers to their original positions. Each marker bears the prisoner’s number rather than his name. However, the names of most of those buried in the cemetery, their inmate number, and the date of their death are listed below.
